Moving water downhill is plumbing. Moving it uphill, at the scale of a river, is one of the most expensive things a society can decide to do — you are paying, every second, to undo gravity. Both of these plants do exactly that, and both are among the largest electrical loads in their regions. But they represent two philosophies of defeat-gravity that are almost mirror images, and the difference is written in the shape of their pumps.
One mountain, one lift 一跃翻山
The California State Water Project carries water down the long trough of the Central Valley easily enough. Then it reaches the Tehachapi Mountains, and Southern California — the demand, the money, the lawns — is on the far side. There is no way around. So at the foot of the range sits the Edmonston Pumping Plant: fourteen pumps that together lift the entire aqueduct 1,926 ft (587 m) straight up the mountain wall in a single stage — the highest single lift of any pumping plant on Earth. Each pump swallows around 80,000 horsepower. The plant is, by itself, one of the largest single consumers of electricity in the state of California.
This is the high-head answer: concentrate the whole climb into one violent, magnificent heave, and pay for it in pressure. The enemy is altitude, and you beat altitude with brute head.
One plain, a staircase 拾级过河
Jiangdu faces the opposite geography and gives the opposite answer. It sits in the flat Jiangsu delta where the Grand Canal meets the Yangtze, and its job is to lift Yangtze water into the old canal and start it walking north — up the North China Plain to Shandong, and eventually toward Tianjin, as the South-to-North Water Diversion, Eastern Route (南水北调东线).
The obstacle here is not a mountain. It is the opposite: land so nearly flat that the whole journey climbs only about 130 ft (40 m) — but over hundreds of kilometres, a slope the eye cannot detect. You do not throw water up a slope like that; you walk it up, in a staircase of thirteen low cascade pumping stations, each nudging the flow a few metres higher, until the Eastern Route has to duck beneath the bed of the Yellow River in tunnels and climb out the other side. Jiangdu itself is the bottom step: four stations, thirty-odd pumps, moving on the order of 470 m³/s — and doing double duty, because the same pumps that push water north in a drought drain the low Lixiahe country (里下河) in a flood.
California fights an altitude with pressure. China fights a distance with patience. 加州以压力对付高差,中国以耐心对付路程。
The head chooses the impeller 扬程选择叶轮
Look inside the two plants and even the machines disagree, for an honest reason. A pump that must raise water hundreds of metres needs a centrifugal impeller — a wheel that flings water outward and turns speed into pressure. A pump that must move an enormous volume only a few metres up wants the opposite: an axial-flow impeller, essentially a ship's propeller in a pipe, that shifts a huge column of water a short height very efficiently.
So Edmonston is a hall of centrifugal giants built for head; Jiangdu is a hall of axial-flow propellers built for flow. They look different for the same reason Hoover and Three Gorges look different — not because one country is cleverer, but because the job's physics reached in and shaped the hardware. On the last page the canyon chose the dam. Here the head chooses the impeller.

Where the canal came back to life 运河复活之处
There is a quiet loop here worth naming. Jiangdu is the exact point where the story of the first drawing comes full circle. The Grand Canal — the one that gave the world the pound lock and whose summit Bai Ying fought for six centuries ago to keep full — no longer earns its keep carrying barges. It earns it as the channel for the Eastern Route. The summit that once starved for one diverted river is now fed, pump by pump, with a diverted Yangtze. Jiangdu is where the old canal was handed a new job: not to move boats over the water, but to be the water, moving.
And underneath both plants — the Californian heave and the Chinese staircase — is the same blunt fact: water is heavy, and it does not want to go where the people are. Somebody has to pay, forever, to persuade it. That toll, and who quietly pays it at the source, is the subject of a field note: Two Aqueducts, One Thirst.
