The Idea
缘起Every river engineer has two rivers: the one on their desk, and the one in their head. Mine on the desk runs through the Jianghuai plain — sluices, pump stations, low dikes holding flat water over flat land. The one in my head runs through Black Canyon, the Central Valley, the Lower Mississippi.
The problems rhyme across the ocean: too much water, then too little; silt that never stops; levees that must not fail. This site reads America's great waterworks with a Chinese engineer's eye — not to rank them, but to hear the rhyme.
Nothing here is authoritative. It is what one reviewer noticed, on the days he wrote it down, reading the far bank by lamplight.
